Tre neofiti sceneggiatori sono stati messi insieme da un paio di produttori avidi di soldi desiderosi solo di portare a termine un ultimo film apocalittico. I tre sono un cowboy sciamano, un jazzista che parla con il suo tamburo e una signora che assomiglia Marylin Monroe mista a un’eroina dei romanzi di Barbara Cartland. I tre riescono a completare l’opera e scrivono di un’onda sismica di immagini che porterà all’autodistruzione di Hollywood. Nel secondo atto, ogni personaggio porta i segni di una trasformazione: dal jazzista che come un cuoco frigge delle uova immaginarie usando la sua batteria come graticola fino al produttore che manifesta un’eruzione cutanea verde, simbolo della sua avidità. Nel finale anche gli sceneggiatori andranno in contro allo stesso destino.

Angel City nasce dall’esperienza di Shepard come sceneggiatore di "Zabriskie Point" il film di Michelangelo Antonioni. E' un'opera che potrebbe inserirsi nel filone del Teatro dell'Assurdo, in contrasto con le sue commedie successive più tipicamente hollywoodiane, True West e Angel City, si rivela un incubo caleidoscopico.
