Thomas Kilroy

Thomas F. Kilroy (1934- ) commediografo e scrittore irlandese, nasce il 23 settembre 1934 a Green Street, Callan, Contea di Kilkenny, studia all’University College di Dublino. All’inizio della sua carriera è un curatore di opere teatrali per l’Abbey Theatre di Dublino. In seguito fonda (insieme a Brian Friel, Stephen Rea e Tom Paulin) la compagnia itinerante Field Day, della quale sarà anche regista . Per diversi anni insegna letteratura inglese presso lo University College di Galway, un incarico da cui si dimette nel 1989 per dedicarsi interamente alla scrittura. Adesso vive nella Contea Mayo ed è socio della Irish Academy of Letters, della Royal Society of Literature e della Aosdàna.

Benché le sue opere teatrali affrontino argomenti irlandesi, Thomas Kirloy è essenzialmente un autore europeo. Più di ogni drammaturgo irlandese, è in tono e in contatto con argomenti di una tradizione ben più vasta.
Seguendo le sue rivisitazioni di Chekhov (Il gabbiano) e di Ibsen (Gli spettri), è chiaro come Kiroy si lasci ispirare dalla drammaturgia di Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) per le tematiche centrali affrontate dall’autore nostrano: l’anatomia della personalità, l’inafferrabilità della realtà, lo scontro tra l’IO personale quando collide con le aspettative del mondo esterno – questi sono semi che egli ha seminato per mezzo secolo. Kilroy è affascinato in particolare da I sei personaggi in cerca di Autore e dall’Enrico IV.
Solo uno scrittore della portata intellettuale e immaginativa di Kilroy avrebbe potuto rivisitare i capolavori di un autore che ha ricevuto il Premio Nobel per “la ardita e ingegnosa rivisitazione della drammaturgia e della messa in scena”.
