The story centers on Patty Johnson, a New York-based singer who performs covers of Patti Smith. Alongside her is Robert, her partner and artistic companion. Their lives are a tangle of nostalgia, unfulfilled dreams, and attempts to leave a mark in the world of alternative rock.
The setting is a cluttered loft in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, filled with boxes, records, wigs, and musical gear—symbols of a life on hold. Patty narrates and relives fragments of her relationship with Robert, as well as her pursuit of artistic recognition. She clings to a past shaped by encounters with cultural icons and brushes with success that never quite materialized.
Through sharply written dialogues and dreamlike sequences, the play questions what it truly means to “make it”—and for whom. An agent offers Patty a form of “borrowed fame,” encouraging her to perform as a tribute act. Though tempted by visibility, she ultimately rejects the commodification of her voice, insisting on her own artistic integrity.
Music plays a central role in the production, featuring tracks by bands like Sonic Youth and Black Sabbath, as well as original compositions, written specifically to reflect Patty’s poetic, rebellious spirit.
Robert & Patty is a contemporary meditation on identity, creativity, and the price of being unseen. It stages the longing to matter in a world where visibility often overrides authenticity, and where the shadow of fame can be both an inspiration and a trap
